Bruce Hatcher is Cape Breton University’s Chair in Marine Ecosystem Research, and Director of the revitalized Bras d’Or Institute at the University. Prior to this appointment he was a Professor of Biology and Director of the Marine Affairs Program at Dalhousie University. He is a founding member of the Elizabeth Mann-Borgese Centre for Ocean Governance, and serves on several national and international Boards and panels.
Educated as a benthic ecologist and oceanographer in Australia, Canada, and the United States, Bruce has 28 years of postdoctoral experience in marine science and as a leader of a wide variety of grant- and contract-funded research and development projects worldwide. His primary expertise lies in the application of ecological theory, empirical analyses, and quantitative modeling to the better understanding and prediction of marine ecosystem function. He currently focuses on the use of synoptic ecological tools (e.g., remote sensing, numerical modeling, and GIS) for the analysis of ecological connectivity and management decision support in coastal ecosystems.
Bruce’s secondary expertise lies in building capacity for research and development in universities and the public and private sectors of the developing, appropriately developed, and overdeveloped world. He has trained 61 graduate students at 5 universities in 4 countries, and consults for the African Development Bank, World Bank, and United Nations Development Program. He served as co-editor of the Springer journal Coral Reefs for 10 years, and continues to help young scholars and practitioners make an impact.
Bruce has published more than 70 peer-reviewed scientific papers and prepared in excess of 40 technical reports. No “arm-chair ecologist,” he has worked in 25 countries and six seas, logging more than 650 days at sea and 1,700 hours working underwater.
