John Cullen is the Killam Chair in Ocean Studies at Dalhousie University, the NSERC/Satlantic Industrial Research Chair in Environmental Observation Technology, and a professor of oceanography. He studies the physiology and ecology of marine phytoplankton, biological interpretations of optical measurements in surface waters, real-time ocean observation and prediction systems, and the culture of marine microalgae for fuels and protein. Much of his research has focused on the influence of environmental conditions (for example, nutrient supply or ultraviolet radiation) on marine phytoplankton. This led to his selection as Fellow of The Oceanography Society.
