Duncan Bates is the OTN technical team and has been an integral part of the organization since 2008. Duncan trained as a biologist at Acadia University in Nova Scotia, Canada, where he received his Bachelor of Science in 1994.
After graduating from Acadia, Duncan spent a brief period tracking aquatic birds, (mainly common loons) with the Canadian Wildlife Service. From there he returned to his earlier work in the marine environment as a scallop farming pioneer in Atlantic Canada. Almost 25 years later Duncan still owns his own scallop farm and is no stranger to a roll- ing deck and long term mooring of heavy equipment in the ocean.
At OTN, he is involved in mooring and acoustic array design, equipment and materials testing, the deployment and recovery of receivers, collection of field data, and much more.
